What is a Sonderforschungsbereich?

Since 1968, the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG) has been supporting so-called Sonderforschungsbereiche (SFB) with public resources.

The SFB is the most popular type of research funding and is regarded as an indicator of international excellence.

As the DFG communicates, "Sonderforschungsbereiche are institutions established at universities for a period of up to 12 years that enable researchers to pursue an outstanding research programme, crossing the boundaries of disciplines, institutes, departments and faculties."

There are two variations in the Sonderforschungsbereiche programme: The traditional Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) is generally applied for by one university and led by that university's researchers.

The SFB/Transregio is jointly applied for by several (generally up to three) universities. The contributions of the cooperative partners are essential, complementary and synergetic to the joint research objective.
